This residential property in Pahoa sits in a densely vegetated lot with tropical tree canopy on multiple sides. That combination of shade, humidity, and Pahoa’s near-constant rainfall had created ideal conditions for algae and mold to establish across both the corrugated metal roof and the solar panel array mounted on it. The job covered two surfaces:
The before photos show the extent of the problem clearly. Both surfaces had been neglected long enough that contamination had moved well past light surface soiling.
The corrugated metal roof presented with:
The solar panels had their own layer of problems:
The roof and solar panels each required a different cleaning approach, and the sequence mattered.
Corrugated metal roof:
The roof was treated using a soft wash application to break down the algae and mold at the biological level before rinsing. Pahoa’s corrugated roofs develop deep biological growth in the panel channels that high-pressure water alone pushes around rather than removes. A surface cleaner attachment was then used on the flat roof sections to strip the remaining contamination and restore the panel surface. The mid-job photo shows exactly where the cleaning line sat: the freshly cleaned green metal contrasts sharply with the untreated dark brown section waiting to be done.
Solar panel cleaning:
Solar panels require a careful approach. Excess pressure can damage the glass surface and frame seals, and leaving cleaning agents on panel glass creates residue that reduces output. The panels were cleaned using low-pressure rinsing combined with appropriate cleaning technique to remove the algae and mineral buildup without compromising the glass coating. All panel surfaces, frame edges, and the areas between mounted panels were addressed. The after photos show the glass returning to its fully reflective black surface with no streaking or residue.
Both surfaces came back clean. The roof went from a nearly uniform dark brown to its original green across both planes. The solar panels went from a matte, contamination-coated surface to clean, reflective glass that can actually do its job.
Results across the two surfaces:
If your solar panels in Pahoa or the surrounding area are covered in algae or mold, they are not operating at full capacity. Panel glass that has lost its transparency blocks light before it ever reaches the cells, and the buildup tends to accelerate once it establishes a hold in the humid conditions here. Getting them cleaned on a regular schedule is the straightforward way to protect both the panels and the output they are supposed to deliver.
