This Hilo home had something you don’t see as often on the east side of the Big Island — an asphalt shingle roof. Most homes in the area have corrugated metal, but this property had a multi-hip architectural shingle roof with a flat membrane section in the center housing two skylights and a solar thermal collector mounted on one of the slopes.
The shingles had developed the dark streaking that asphalt roofs in Hilo accumulate over time:
The flat membrane section was particularly affected — the dark coverage across the entire surface suggested the growth had been established for some time.
This is the most important distinction between cleaning a metal roof and cleaning an asphalt shingle roof, and it’s where a lot of damage gets done by contractors who don’t adjust their approach.
Asphalt shingles are coated in granules — small aggregate particles embedded in the surface that protect the underlying mat from UV exposure and give the shingle its texture and color. High-pressure washing strips those granules off. Once they’re gone, the shingle’s lifespan shortens significantly and the damage is permanent.
The correct method for asphalt shingles is soft washing:
The flat membrane section and skylight frames were hand-cleaned separately — a soft brush and bucket rather than any spray application on the membrane surface.
The soft wash solution was applied across all shingle slopes starting at the ridge and working down. The ridge cap area received focused treatment — that’s where the growth was heaviest and where water from both slopes converges, keeping the surface wet longest after rain.
The hip intersections were treated individually, as those angles collect runoff from multiple directions and tend to hold organic growth longer than the open shingle runs on the main slopes.
For the flat membrane section:
The solar thermal collector and the surrounding shingles were cleaned with the same soft wash approach — the collector glass was rinsed carefully without pressure that could stress the frame or connections.
After the full soft wash was complete:
From the street, the difference was clear. The before shots show a roof with patchy dark discoloration across the main slopes and along the ridge line. The after shots show consistent gray shingle color from eave to ridge on every face of the house.
If you have an asphalt shingle roof in Hilo that has developed dark streaking or mold growth, soft washing is the right approach. It removes the growth without damaging the shingle surface — and in Hilo’s climate, where organic growth comes back regularly, keeping up with it is more cost-effective than waiting until the staining is severe.
