This property in Pahoa presented with problems on two fronts: a solar panel array coated in heavy biological growth that had built up across the full installation, and a gutter system so clogged it had turned into a planter. The blue corrugated metal roof between the two problem areas showed the same algae streaking running down toward the gutter edge. The full scope of the job covered:
The before photos leave nothing to interpretation. Both surfaces were well past the point of light maintenance cleaning.
The solar panels showed the following conditions across both rows:
The gutter condition was severe enough to be a structural concern:
In Pahoa’s climate, a gutter that is not flowing freely is not just a maintenance issue. Overflowing water drives moisture up under roofing and along fascia boards, and the standing water accelerates corrosion in metal gutters from the inside out.
The two surfaces required separate approaches and had to be sequenced properly.
Gutter clearing:
The gutters were cleared manually before any washing took place. The rooted plant growth, compacted soil, moss, and accumulated debris were removed from the channel. Flushing gutters that are packed with plant material before manually removing the bulk of it just forces organic matter deeper into the downspout. Once the channels were cleared, the gutters were flushed through to confirm the downspouts were flowing freely and not obstructed at the outlet.
Solar panel cleaning:
The panels were cleaned using a low-pressure approach appropriate for glass panel surfaces. Algae and biological films on panel glass require chemical break-down before rinsing rather than relying on mechanical force alone. High-pressure washing on solar panels risks damaging frame seals and forcing water into the mounting hardware. A soft wash treatment was applied to the panel surfaces to loosen the algae layer, followed by thorough rinsing to clear the glass without leaving streaks or residue. All panels in both rows were cleaned, including the frame edges and the visible sections of mounting rail.
The after photos show the full change across both surfaces. The panels went from opaque brown glass to clear, reflective surfaces with the cell grid pattern fully visible through clean glass. The gutters went from functioning planters back to working drainage channels.
Specific results:
If your solar panels in Pahoa are coated in algae or the glass looks matte rather than reflective, they are losing output. Panels in East Hawaii need cleaning more frequently than panels in drier climates because the combination of humidity, vog, and organic matter from nearby vegetation builds up fast. Catching it before it bakes onto the glass during dry spells keeps the cleaning manageable and the panels producing what they are supposed to produce.
